Cicada Invasion: Brood XIII and Brood XIX to Emerge in 2024

Dual Explosion of Cicadas Expected

Get ready for a once-in-a-century event as two broods of cicadas, Brood XIII and Brood XIX, are set to emerge in the Midwest and Southeast in spring 2024. This dual appearance has not been seen since 1803.

Map Predicts Cicada Hotspots

An interactive map has been created to help predict where and when the cicadas will emerge. According to the map, Chicago and parts of Illinois will be affected by both broods, creating a massive cicada invasion.

Brood XIII

Brood XIII will emerge in Georgia and the Southeast, while Brood XIX will emerge in Illinois and the Midwest. The cicadas will be most visible from April to June, emerging from the ground to mate and lay eggs.

Cicada Impacts

Cicadas are generally harmless to humans, but they can cause minor annoyances with their loud mating calls and large numbers. They can also damage young trees and plants by feeding on their roots.
